Popular Music Preaches Christian Salvation

And no one would mistake their blaring guitars and insistent percussion for choir music, but the “heavenly metal“ rock group Stryper is part of a growing contingent of Christians preaching salvation in the vernacular of popular music.

Evangelical pop has grown so rapidly since its origins in the “Jesus movement“ of the late 1960s and early `70s that its record sales, now about $300 million a year, have surpassed those of classical and of jazz, according to Todd Hafer, a spokesman for the Christian Booksellers Association.
